What is Rapport Building?
Rapport building is a way of establishing a connection with someone else on a personal level. You can attain this by asking open-ended engaging questions like -Hi [First Name], I heard you recently moved to [location]. I lived there for 3 years. How're you settling in?
Sometimes it happens naturally when both the people have a common interest or topic to discuss upon. Rapport building in initial interactions is important for business deals - especially when you are planning to build a long-lasting relationship with the prospect. It is advisable to be prepared with certain engaging questions based on your personal experience or research about the prospect. It is usually based on shared experiences or views, including a shared sense of humor. It is also important to show curiosity and be empathetic towards the prospect.
Why is it important to build rapport?
Rapport is important in both our personal and professional lives. Personal relationships are easier to make and develop when there is a closer connection and understanding between the parties involved. It is also considered to be a good leadership quality to earn the trust and respect of all underlings. Having an emotional connection with your acquaintance provides transparency in the work environment.
On a person-to-person level, you don’t spend a significant amount of time with all your acquaintances to share an emotional understanding for each other. Therefore it is important to spend a portion of the time you get with each individual building rapport other than business talks. On a personal level, it will also affect your command over conversations and will make you more empathetic towards other human beings.
